Kelly Slater: Superhuman. That’s all I’m going to say about that.
I mostly just wanted to update you guys on the surfer stalking. I saw one character on the 6 train who I’m 96% sure was a surfer (very blonde and wearing a neon pink t-shirt) but he basically disappeared after getting off at Spring Street. I thought for sure he’d head to Saturdays, but no such luck. He has literally been the only person to set off my surfer-dar since I decided to conduct this massively creepy experiment, but I’ll not be deterred…
In other news, I am going to Tex-ass tomorrow for my dear friend Cody’s wedding and I’m super psyched–even though I’m missing this swellage:
Ah well, let me know how your sessions go!
I hate that I missed Nightriders this year–drinking beers on the beach while watching this is so much fun–but here’s a cool little video from Rob Kelly:
“The Surf Club at Guido Beach, NJ hosted the second annual Nightriders event. Teams of two went out and whipped each other into waves to please the crowd on Friday night of July 23rd. @robkellysurf”
Vodpod videos no longer available.
I can’t tell you how awesome it was to see Shaun Tomson or Sam Trammel at Surf 24 on ISD. But I can tell you how eerie Huntington Pier, weirdly, is not at 3 a.m. I can tell you how there were guys in mummy bags sleeping (or trying to) on the sand, and how tired watchdogs were checking for wristbands, but unwilling to chase anyone down who couldn’t show one. I can tell you that the waves were slightly sloppy, about waist-high. That they crept out of the darkness and picked up many a resolute rider, powering through the witching hour.
I can tell you that Billabong ultimately won, but that the mood, at least in the middle of the night, was one of drowsy solidarity.
I finally submitted my INNERSECTION ranking for the spring round — with 12 hours to spare. Here’s what I came up with after much deliberation:
Care to discuss?
The SURFER and Oakley Surf Shop Challenge kicks off April 2nd with the Southwest regional comp in Cardiff, C.A. The next stop is Seaside Heights, N.J. (Casino Pier!) Last year, the team from Heritage (Sea Isle City, N.J.) won the Northeast title for the second consecutive year. On April 19-20, Heritage will battle royale with Ocean Hut, Inlet Outlet and other regional teams for a page in SURFER, awesome gear, and a trip to Huntington Beach for the National Championships in September. Also up for grabs: $10,000 and the [somewhat diluted] right to say the best surfers come from ____. Check out the full schedule here.
Dean Randazzo and friends raised $6,000 at last week’s 3rd Annual Freeze for a Cause. Soon after, Dean ditched the Jersey deluge in favor of the Sunshine State for SURF FEST 2010. On Saturday, the N.J. surf legend snagged 1st place in the Masters of Surfing Pro event at Sebastian Inlet. Congratulations, Dean!
